Yes, I am alive.  And I promise to be blogging (and cooking) more in the upcoming weeks.

This post, however, is to document the 10k that I ran this morning.  I know for some serious runners this may not be a huge deal, but it was my first time running this distance in a more competitive atmosphere, so yay me!

As I had previously mentioned, participation in this race came to be when I decided 1) I was slacking on my running 2) I was flabbing up a bit and 3) I needed some form of motivation.  So, I literally registered for the first 10k that was coming up and took place on a Sunday (since I work on Saturdays).  Hence my participation in the “Gumbo Limbo Green Turtle Gallop” in Boca Raton for sea turtle conservation.

Now, don’t let the name fool you.  When I showed up this morning, the event was crawling with serious runners.  I’m talking fit, toned people with multiple 13.1 and 26.2 stickers on their cars.  The types of people who run these 10ks as warm-ups or tapers for their marathons.   I ran this race with a friend of mine who used to be in the Israeli army and even he was a bit shocked at the uber-competitive turn out.  We overheard a group talking about how they “knocked out 10 miles yesterday like it was nothing”.

Don’t get me wrong.  I run (kind of) frequently, and a few summers ago I actually logged serious milage.  But lately, my runs have been more of the 3-4 mile variety squeezed in whenever I find a spare milisecond in my week.  Needless to say, I was nervous.  I seriously thought to myself “what if I actually finish last?”

I did NOT finish last.  Or even close to it. Completed the whole thing in 62 minutes which was exactly my goal.  Although the 6.2 miles were challenging, I was able to run most of this at a very comfortable pace and could have even kept going.  Finishing this race made me feel great inside and motivated me to sign up for more.

One item on my bucket list is to run a half marathon one day, and I had been seriously considering flying to Chicago this May for the one benefitting Northwestern University’s Brain Tumor Research Center, as this cause is extremely near and dear to my heart.  Unfortunately, the race is the day of my graduation from pharmacy school. I did manage to stumble upon the Florida Brain Tumor Association’s 10th annual 5k happening in two weeks right in my area.  I was ecstatic to discover this race and immediately signed up, along with my boyfriend.

I am so happy that I am back in the running groove.  The sense of accomplishment, motivation, and happiness it brings never ceases to amaze me.  I read a running quote somewhere that read “man, I really regret that run. -said nobody ever”.  Totally true.

To celebrate my newly recharged running spirit, I updated my playlist and bought a brand new pair of Asics.

Life moves pretty fast….

Within a time span of seven days, from February 27-March 6 to be exact, so many parts of my life began to fall into place.  It’s crazy how everything exciting in life seems to happen all at once.  This week has been an absolute whirlwind.  I have been dying to blog about all of the exciting and scary changes ahead, both to share and to to have a moment of reflection for myself.

Her name is Macy- Macy Mae to be be exact.  We had been talking about adopting a dog for the longest time now, but we never felt 100% ready for the added responsibility.  Then, it hit us.  We will never be 100% ready!  Life is always crazy and always busy and we are never going to want to walk a dog at 6am.  But, as any dog owner will tell you, the payoff is so worth it.  We finally just took the leap and did it.  We said ‘yes’ to the dog.  I would be lying if I didn’t mention the insane anxiety that the added responsibility gave us at first, but a little over a week in, we have fell into a routine and love her to death.

Obligatory rant:

Please, please, please if you are thinking about getting a dog, ADOPT!  The Humane Society and Rescue groups are loaded with the sweetest, kindest, friendliest, healthiest dogs of ALL ages and ALL breeds.  You can be placed on a list for a certain breed or seek out breed-specific rescues in your state, if you have a breed preference.  Of course, I’m partial to mutts, but to each is own :)  Not only are you adopting a family member for life, but it opens up a spot for another precious dog to come in from a kill-shelter or owner surrender.  I am so passionate about this, I could go on forever.  But, I’ll leave it at this: don’t shop, adopt!

March 1:  Celebrated Ryan’s 26th birthday

It is so crazy to admit, be we are getting old!  My man is in his last year of his ‘mid twenties’.  We went out to a nice dinner at J. Alexanders on Friday and celebrated out with friends on Saturday.  We really enjoyed the food at J. Alexanders, but I have to admit that I am partial to Houston’s [for that price range and cuisine].

The grilled artichokes were delicious!  The foodie in me is embarrassed to admit, however, that I have no clue how much of an artichoke to eat.  Oops.  The ‘not your ordinary’ mac and cheese was also delicious, but practically swimming in the cream and cheese.  I felt as though I were eating cream with macaroni in it.  Two bites was plenty.  My salmon was very good, served with a dill sauce on the side.  However, I have had better salmon at a restaurant [Bonefish Grill and Season’s 52 to name a few].  Either way, it was a lot of fun to have a reason to try a new restaurant.  Happy Birthday Ryan! … (Let’s see if he actually reads this)

March 1:  Signed up to run my first 10k

True story: I talk about “goals” and things I want to accomplish, but then, surprise, life gets too busy and it doesn’t happen.  Case in point: run a 10k.

Funny story:  I decided, after a particularly unproductive and difficult gym session, that it was time to 1) get back in shape, and 2) accomplish this frickin goal.  So, I came upstairs, and in the heat of the moment, signed up for the 1st 10k that takes place on a Sunday in my area (because I work on Saturdays).  I didn’t care about the cause, I simply wanted to cross this item off of my bucket list and have a reason to push my butt to run every week.

So, I am now signed up to run the “Gumbo Lumbo Green Turtle Gallop” on April 7.  Yes, I am running 6.2 miles for sea turtle conservation, and I couldn’t be happier about it.

March 6: Official Job Offer!!!

I was officially offered a full time pharmacist position post-graduation.  And the kicker?  It is located right where I live.  Those of you who aren’t currently on the hunt for full time, well paying, post-grad school jobs in desirable/saturated areas may not fully understand, but this is huge!  I finally feel as though my hard work is paying off and I am getting what I deserve.  I can officially say I see the light at the end of the tunnel, and that light is bright!

Honestly, I have been through some rough patches these past few years, and it feels pretty amazing to feel all of these good changes on the horizon.  It is not always easy to “just stay positive”or “just keep pushing on”, and many times I wanted to seriously punch people in the face for uttering those phrases to me.  But, life really does move in cycles, and things really do get better.  And sometimes, good things do happen to good people.

So many of our days are spent wishing more exciting things were happening or yearning for x amount of days/weeks/months to pass.  Then, when we finally arrive at that accomplishment/goal/vacation/ending we want so bad, it all happens so quickly, that we don’t even appreciate it as it’s unfolding.

This week was splendid and eye-opening for me, and I want to cherish this feeling of happiness, gratefulness, and uninterrupted joy.  I want to forget about my anxieties and fears of all the added responsibilities ahead of me, and just savor this feeling.

Because really, life moves pretty fast.  If you don’t stop and look around one in a while, you might miss it.-Ferris Bueller.

Random Resolutions

Lately I have realized something.  Call it an epiphany, a “lightbulb” moment if you will.

Life is hard.

I don’t mean that in a depressing, whiny, unappreciative, or overly-deep way, and I am not trying to turn a typically upbeat blog into a self-help/ soul searching one.  All I mean is that the reality of everyday life is exhausting, and it is so easy to lose yourself in obligations and to-do lists that the little daily pleasures get sacrificed.  I am finding it really necessary to assess my thoughts and actions frequently and set mini goals or desires for myself.   I find this so helpful in terms of realigning priorities, and in making progress towards being happier with the way each day plays out.

Yesterday was so hectic that I actually forgot about my Monday Morning Moment post, and the sad/corny/geeky thing is, I was really bummed out when I realized that.

Although February 19th seems as random a time as any to do some self reflection, I have decided that I am at that perfect crossroads of overwhelmed and motivated that it is time to set some goals for the next, lets say, 30 days.  We all have little things that help us stay sane, happy, motivated, confident, (insert any positive adjective), and this is my list of such things.

My Totally Random, Off-Topic, Very Necessary Resolutions:

1.  Sit on my balcony each morning and enjoy my coffee/breakfast.

2. Run more often.  Same goes for weights.  Less lazy-girl elliptical!

3. Make more of an effort to catch up with old friends.

4. Be more organized and on top of chores (boring but so necessary)

5. Improve time management

6. Read every day, even if for 5 minutes

7. Spend a little more time getting ready each day.  Let’s face it girls- we feel better when we look  a little more put together.

When you think about it, these little things are what we have to keep us happy.  While vacations and fancy dinners and holidays are nice, they are not everyday occurrences.   These short (yet often forgotten) lists of pleasures and such keep our lives happy and organized on a day to day basis.  I honestly feel writing these down, whether on a blog or a post-it note, make us feel more accountable and likely to follow our own advice.

Of course, life will get crazy again, and I will once again need to re-assess all of the important pleasures I let slip.  But hopefully, when that time comes, some of these 7 things will be habit, and I can add new things to my list.
